We strive to empower Latino communities and community health workers to understand, navigate, and advocate for equitable access to healthcare services and resources, while fostering partnerships and continuous learning to address the diverse health needs of the Latino population.

What are community health workers ?

Community Health Workers (CHWs) play a vital role in bridging the gap between healthcare services and communities. They are trusted members of the communities they serve, equipped with the knowledge to provide culturally relevant health information and support. Their primary goal is to improve health outcomes by addressing the social determinants of health, advocating for patient needs, and facilitating access to healthcare services.

Promotores de Salud in the Latino Community

Community health workers (CHWs) are frontline public health workers who have a close understanding of the community they serve. This trust enables them to act as liaisons, link individuals to healthcare resources, and provide education on health practices. CHWs often work in diverse settings, including community-based organizations, healthcare facilities, and public health departments.

 

 

Roles and Responsibilities of Community Health Workers:

  • Providing culturally appropriate health education and information

  • Advocating for the needs of the community

  • Linking individuals to health services and resources

  • Offering informal counseling and social support

  • Facilitating communication between healthcare providers and patients

  • Assisting in managing chronic conditions and promoting healthy lifestyles

In Latino communities, community health workers are commonly known as Promotores de Salud. This role is deeply rooted in cultural traditions and community networks. Promotores de Salud are often seen as trusted advisors and community leaders who understand the unique challenges faced by Latino populations.

 

They play a critical role in promoting health equity and improving access to care by:

  • Providing bilingual and culturally relevant health education

  • Helping navigate the healthcare system

  • Addressing barriers such as language, transportation, and healthcare access

  • Building trust between healthcare providers and community members

How to Become a Community Health Worker

Maryland

While Maryland, does not mandate certification for CHWs, obtaining formal training can enhance your skills and employment prospects.

Washington, D.C.

While Washington, D.C., does not mandate certification for CHWs, obtaining formal training can enhance your skills and employment prospects.

  • Trinity Washington University offers an 18-credit Community Health Worker Certificate program designed to prepare individuals for roles in community health. ​Program completers will serve as a health advocate and liaison in the community, while receiving a certificate showing achievement of the required knowledge and skills to be a community health worker. Virginia

  • Complete a Virginia-Approved CHW Core Training Program

    • Complete 60 hours of training covering core competencies from a Virginia Certification Board (VCB) accredited provider.​ Website: https://www.vacertboard.org/cchw

    • Accumulate 2,000 hours (approximately one year full-time) of paid or volunteer experience as a CHW within the last three years.

How to Renew a CHW Certification

Maryland

  • CHW certifications in Maryland are valid for 2 years.

  • To renew, CHWs must complete at least 20 hours of continuing education (CEUs) during the certification period.

  • Renewal is completed through the same MDH portal, with submission of CEU documentation and a renewal fee.

  • It's recommended to track your CEUs throughout the year to make renewal smooth and stress-free.

Washington, D.C.

  • Currently, there is no formal renewal process for CHWs in Washington, D.C., as certification is not required. However, staying updated with continuing education and training is advisable to maintain competency in the field.​
